So after the events of this week, you have to ask yourself, “What the heck just happened?” Well, I think I know.
What was meant to be a crass joke to help rally support against the war & against Bush, Kerry says this little off hand comment paraphrased: If you work hard, get educated, you will do well. If not, you will get stuck in Iraq. It was a comment that was meant to stay at this college with these students and not to be broadcast all over the nation. But was this so bad? Why was it said? Was it intentional or a slip up on a joke?
Slip Up? “Sorta.”
I don’t think so. After reviewing these comments over and over, Kerry’s crack staff decided that he left out the word “us”. Hm. So it should read,
“You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get US stuck in Iraq.”
If this was a joke, I don’t get it. How is that any better? He says that this “US” makes the whole phrase refer to President Bush and this administration. Kerry is quick to forget that Bush had a 77% average in college while Kerry had a 76%.
Why did He say it?
Because he believes it! No seriously. I’m not being a “right wing nut job”. The democrats have long touted that the recruiting tactics of the Military are to target the poor and impoverished, uneducated and simple minded by using scholarships for college and a great benefits package to lure them in! This is nothing new! They usually bring this up as recruitment rates increase and as reenlistment’s increase even though we are at war. If they don’t say this, then it means that more people are in support of the war so they have to make it look like it is a recruiting tactic. Some Libs even mentioned this in Kerry’s defence. This is why it was only “sorta” a slip up. He really believes it! But is it true? NO! Actual Recruiting Stats – this is a study by the Heritage Foundation that asks “Who Are Our Recruits.” What this study finds is that the recruits are actually MORE educated (not less) than their non-enlisted counterparts. And they are actually already better off financially than the average for those of their same age groups! So, it seems that people are joining the military to serve their country. Imagine that.
Another reason He said it?
Guns & Butter! This is the classic economic analogy about government spending & subsidies. You can break down the budget into two categories: Guns (Defence & Military Spending) & Butter (Domestic Spending). The Republicans have long had the reputation of spending more on Guns and less on Butter. The Democrats spend more on Butter and less on Guns. That is just the way it is. However, this creates some animosity against the military in the eyes of the Dems. Every dime spent on Guns is a dime that can’t be put into their Butter (usually government programs). It is only natural for the Dems to try to convince others that the troops are not a good place to put our money. One of the way of doing this is to attack the character and integrity of the troops. It is political suicide, obviously, but it is a way nonetheless. The more common way of achieving this for Dems is to “Cut & Run”. i.e. Vietnam.
Was this so bad?
YES! Just look at the troops response!
This was a bad move by the Dems and one that may cost them the election! I hope more people bring up previous comments by them that have questioned the integrity of our troops in the past! This is nothing new! The apology was new, but the slight put downs and bashing of our Military is common place among Dems.
I hope this experience shows Democrats that they had better be more careful with what they say! I was wrong when I said that the media wouldn’t touch it! In a recently announced effort to be more nonpartisan, they made him pay for this one dearly!

Kerry’s ’72 Army Comments Mirror Latest
“I am convinced a volunteer army would be an army of the poor and the black and the brown,” Kerry wrote. “We must not repeat the travesty of the inequities present during Vietnam. I also fear having a professional army that views the perpetuation of war crimes as simply ‘doing its job.'”
Thanks John. You do believe it and you’ve proved it!
